Live-In Lead Permaculture / Farm Hand

The Lead Permaculture / Farm Hand position will be accountable for:

  • Review and execution of our permaculture plan. It’s about a 15 acre area where we have zone 1 through 3 including garden, greenhouse, orchard, etc.

  • Expanding beyond that is our animal grazing space, pond networks and future food forest. Which you will be a part of but not accountable for.

  • Working within the given budget and prioritization to create and optimize the areas and systems needed

  • Give your insights and ideas to better the plan or make alterations you see fit

  • Clearly laying out and systemizing the operations for future employees and volunteers to step into roles and take over tasks as the farm expands

  • You will be provided with volunteers and live work exchange hands to help complete the project. You do need to manage, lead them, teach them, and structure their tasks.

  • Integrating the animal aspect as we only have a market garden right now

  • Get the poly carbonate nursery greenhouse installed and functional

  • General landscaping and beautifying of the areas

  • Reporting and sharing results in weekly meetings

  • Helping out and learning in other areas

    • We are a small team so we tend to jump around and help out in different areas. Plus, it keeps things interesting and lets everyone learn.

Experience & Traits Needed

  • 4-5+ years of permaculture design and build out / farming experience

  • Have previously built or worked extensively on an operational permaculture farm

  • You have been a part of creating or operating a profitable farm and understand the business side of farming

  • You have experiencing processing farmed goods (i.e. storing, preserving, canning, preparing for markets, etc)

  • A deep enjoyment of integrating nature and it’s systems into our land to keep alternative energy needs as low as possible

  • Clear communication skills

  • Knowledge in water management as that is one of the key focuses for our high and dry land

  • Must have valid drivers license

  • A good sense of humour and playfulness

  • You like to get things done, to do the task well, and fill your time productively (the opposite of not wanting to work and complaining about it)

Not Needed But A Benefit

  • knowledge and experience building ponds, swales, and gravity feeding water

  • Ability to operate basic farm equipment like tractors, skid steers, etc

  • Ability to operate heavy machinery like excavators, bulldozers, and logging skidders

  • Can hook up and tow a trailer confidently

  • Your vehicle is a truck

  • Have you own cell phone

  • Have your own laptop

Housing

  • Your own dwelling is required at this time for this position (trailer, tinyhome, etc)

  • We recommend a tiny home but a trailer or other options are fine. It can be a tough go up here in the winter sometimes.

  • Your immediate Family is welcome! We don’t expect you to leave them behind and come live out here on your own!

  • You will have use of all public spaces for washrooms, showering, cooking, doing dishes, laundry, and the spa

  • We supply water. May have to transport it at first but will get a water line ran to you resident site.

  • You must supply your own power source. Solar with back up gen. If you don’t have solar yet we can hook you up at cost with our supplier.

Salary

  • $3000-4000 / month starting salary (competative)

  • Bonuses based on targets

  • Higher targets will be discussed to get you to your goals

  • 3 month onboarding period (some benefits kick in right away, others will kick in when the onboarding period is complete)
